Route: Berlin, Germany → Salzburg, Austria
Duration: Approx. 1 hour
Aircraft: Airbus A319
Class: Economy
At 36 weeks pregnant, I opted for a short flight to Austria instead of enduring an 8+ hour drive on the often unpredictable German Autobahn. With traffic risks and comfort in mind, flying with Eurowings seemed like the more practical choice for our summer vacation this year.
Review Criteria
In my airline reviews, I focus on six key aspects:
- Booking and check-in process
- Boarding experience
- Seat comfort and layout
- Baby- and child-friendly meals
- Crew and service experience
- In-flight entertainment for children
Booking & Check-In
The process was straightforward. I booked our tickets online, selected the luggage category that best suited us (23 kg checked baggage, 8 kg cabin bag, and a small personal item each), and checked in online 72 hours before departure.
Eurowings allows two pieces of bulky baby gear — such as a stroller and a car seat, which is what we brought — to be checked for free when traveling with children up to 11 years old. A nice family-friendly policy that added convenience to our trip.
Boarding
Families with children under 5 were invited to board early, a gesture I always appreciate. It's not mandatory, but being given the choice makes a real difference — especially when traveling with small children.
Upon entering the aircraft, we handed a small painting from Anuuk to the flight attendant, who graciously passed it to the pilots. To my surprise, we were immediately invited into the cockpit to meet the pilots and take a photo. In over 25 flights with my daughter, this was the first time we’d received such a warm and personal gesture. Thank you, Eurowings — she loved it.
Seats & Comfort
While this was a short-haul flight, I found the seats more than adequate. Compared to more minimalist airlines like Ryanair, the Airbus A319 offered a few thoughtful touches: a mesh seat pocket for small items, and a small hook for hanging a trash bag — which I always use for wipes, wrappers, and other small waste items during the flight.
For such a short journey, comfort wasn’t an issue. For long-haul, however, the A319 wouldn’t be my preferred aircraft — but for one hour, it was just fine.

Baby & Child Meal Availability
Children’s meals on Eurowings are available only on long-haul or Business Class flights. Since this was a short-haul economy journey, we didn't have access to that option.
That said, their buy-on-board menu included a few child-appropriate options such as pasta and sandwiches, which could easily work for toddlers or older kids.
Cabin Crew & Customer Service
The crew on this flight were exceptional. Friendly, relaxed, and accommodating from the moment we boarded to the moment we disembarked.
One highlight: due to a delay while taxiing, we remained seated on the runway for 30 minutes before takeoff. As every parent of a two-year-old knows, keeping a toddler buckled in for that long is a tall order. I appreciated that the crew allowed some flexibility and didn’t intervene unnecessarily. Once we began taxiing, I fastened Anuuk’s seatbelt and the crew simply came by to confirm. No fuss, no judgment.
When my daughter needed a diaper change during the delay, I asked one of the stewards if I could use the lavatory early. Not only did he say yes, he also went ahead and prepared the changing table for us. It’s these small gestures that truly elevate the experience — especially for parents traveling solo.
In-Flight Entertainment
As expected, there were no entertainment screens — which is typical for short-haul European flights. That said, I currently raise my daughter without screens, so in-flight entertainment is always based on our own planning.
Here’s what I packed for this flight:
• Two Danish age appropriate books.
• Activity cards (from Lovevery) displaying different activities like taking a bath, eating a waffle, cleaning up after playing with your toys etc. There are so many different ways to talk about these cards with your child. We use them a lot.
• Crayons and a large sheet of newspaper for drawing.
• Our go-to travel toy: the Compact Magnetic Tiles Travel Set.
At the moment, absolutely nothing beats our Compact Magnetic Tiles Travel Set. We use it both on flights and at restaurants. Anuuk can play with it for a surprisingly long time compared to other toys suitable for her age.
I originally bought it simply because I thought it was practical—the tiles and the travel case are magnetic (which is ideal during turbulence)—but I never imagined she would enjoy it this much. You can find it on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/4lSHCXC.
Final Thoughts
For a short-haul journey, our experience with Eurowings was excellent. From the warm welcome to the cockpit visit and the helpful, child-friendly crew, everything ran smoothly — and most importantly, stress-free.
I'll be flying long-haul with Eurowings again in December 2025 and will share a follow-up review then.
Safe travels,
